Identify the actual coolant system
Use product documentation, batch records, equipment requirements and service history. Record whether the material is a concentrate or premix, the glycol family, inhibitor technology and source-water requirements.
Top-up with an unknown product can alter inhibitor balance, reserve alkalinity, solids formation and corrosion protection even when the colour appears unchanged.
Use chemistry to investigate
Glycol concentration, density or refractive index can assess dilution when used with a validated product relationship. pH and conductivity are operational indicators rather than standalone compatibility tests.
Elemental and ion information can help compare inhibitor patterns or detect contamination, but a laboratory still needs a known reference and product context.
